POSSESSION by Elana Johnson
This is a book I’ve been looking forward to for a long time.
Read the summary below and I think you’ll understand why:
Vi knows the Rule: Girls don't walk with boys, and they never even think about kissing them. But no one makes Vi want to break the Rules more than Zenn...and since the Thinkers have chosen him as Vi's future match, how much trouble can one kiss cause? The Thinkers may have brainwashed the rest of the population, but Vi is determined to think for herself.
But the Thinkers are unusually persuasive, and they're set on convincing Vi to become one of them...starting by brainwashing Zenn. Vi can't leave Zenn in the Thinkers' hands, but she's wary of joining the rebellion, especially since that means teaming up with Jag. Jag is egotistical, charismatic, and dangerous--everything Zenn's not. Vi can't quite trust Jag and can't quite resist him, but she also can't give up on Zenn.
This is a game of control or be controlled. And Vi has no choice but to play.
This book.
Is awesome.
Control or be controlled. I love that. And that, in essence, is the undertone of POSSESSION. In more ways than one.
A lot of times there is something very specific that I adore about a book that makes me shout about it from the hilltops (or, um, the blog). But this specific thing that I love so much is something I cannot share. Not even a little. You should probably read it so we can freak out about it together.
So, there’s this other huge aspect that I loved, but, ugh, I can’t talk about that either. So I guess what I’m saying is this: I didn’t suspect anything about this book. It surprised me over and over and over again. And I don’t want to spoil it for anyone.
So I’m going to talk about the one thing I can talk about without giving anything away, and that is the world in POSSESSION. There are the Goodies, who live in the Goodgrounds, and the Baddies, who live in the Badlands. There are people who toe the line, hook up to their feeds, and allow people to think for them. And there are the people who don’t. And then there are the Thinkers, who provide the thoughts to the Goodies. Everyone wants Vi on their side. And they want her badly.
The question is: why?
I loved the world of POSSESSION. And I also loved the story, even though I can't really talk about it. But underneath it all, it’s really just a story about a girl trying to make the right choice for her. But it sure doesn’t help that the people she loves are on opposite sides of the line....
Okay, seriously, I’m biting my tongue! That’s all I can say!
